It is said that Anandiben Patel himself supported her while she was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Later when Anandiben Patel was removed from the post of Chief Minister, he also supported Bhupendra Patel to contest from his seat.

Not only this, when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Patel was the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation between 1999-2001 while he was the Vice-Chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board between 2008-10. From 2010 to 2015, he was also a councilor from the Thaltej ward of Ahmedabad.

In the 2017 assembly elections, Bhupendra Patel defeated Shashikant Patel of Congress. An interesting anecdote about this is that in the 2017 assembly elections, former Chief Minister of the state Anandiben Patel refused to contest the election.
