15 August 1947 Newspaper
On 15 August 1947, newspapers celebrated the birth of a new country. From The New York Times to The Hindu, front-page headlines served as brevity, belying the epoch-making meaning of the news they brought.
The Times of India carried a large banner depicting the ‘Birth of India’s Independence’. Several obscure passages, passages, and sub-headings on the page quote from Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, Lord Mountbatten’s then one-day visit. The excitement in Old Pakistan, Bombay, the formation of a new cabinet under Nehru, Gandhi’s fast and lowering of the Union Jack.
The Hindu on its website offers a digital experience of turning the pages of the August 15, 1947 edition. On page one – in a tradition that can be applauded even by today’s newspapers – there are celebratory ads by brands cashing in on the day’s promises in bulk.
The original ‘Page One’ declares in clear words that ‘Free India is born’. It also records the assurance given to the minorities by ‘Rajen Babu’ – the President of the Constituent Assembly and later Dr. Rajendra Prasad of India.
The Statesman interestingly noted that apart from the banner headline ‘Two Dominions Arise’, it meant that “one-fifth of the human race” got political freedom.
