rituals of avani avittam
Avani Avittam is the most auspicious day for the Brahmin community. On this day, male members of the Brahmin family usually change their sacred thread on the banks of rivers or ponds or in temples.
Some people perform this ritual in their homes. Men take a resolution or a vow to atone for all the sins of the past. They take a holy bath and wear a new sacred thread called Yajnopaveet or Poonool.
The first step is to pray as a remedy for sins. This prayer is offered to wash away all sins and receive divine blessings to fulfill the basic duties of a Brahmin as prescribed in the Vedic scriptures.
While wearing the sacred thread, a mantra is chanted that reflects the sanctity of the sacred thread, which is inseparable from God and a tool for prolonging life. This sacred thread will also provide strength and dignity.
Similarly, while removing the old thread, a specific mantra is chanted, which symbolizes the clearing of the old thread (energy) and a new beginning. In simple words, this day symbolizes retrospection and repentance to mark a new beginning.
This day is also auspicious because Brahmins perform tarpan (ancestral rituals) to their ancestors, to whom they owe their birth, and to the great sages to whom they are deeply indebted for spiritual knowledge and the Vedas. The home (fireplace) is also done.
