World Press Freedom Day was first conceived when a group of African journalists gathered in Namibia for a UNESCO meeting on promoting an independent and pluralistic press.
They suggested designating May 3rd as a global day to recognize and defend press freedom.
The concept was later accepted by the UNESCO General Conference in 1993, and the UN General Assembly declared that May 3rd would become the annual date for World Press Freedom Day.
Since then, the day has been observed annually to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and the need to maintain the independence of the media.
