Odisha Train Accident Death List

The Odisha government on Tuesday confirmed that the final death toll from the triple train accident stands at 288 out of which 205 bodies have been transferred. Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena announced the unfortunate number “after the reconciliation of district hospitals, mortuaries & reports from collectors of different districts.”

Three trains collided near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district last week which left 288 dead and nearly 1000 injured. The injured were admitted to various hospitals across Balasore, Cuttack, and West Bengal. The accident occurred around 7 PM on Friday.

Both passenger trains were at high speed, and experts have cited it as one of the main reasons for the high number of casualties.

In order to avail the compensation, the families or relatives of the victims have to follow the following steps:

  • They have to approach the hospital where the body has been kept or the injured are undergoing treatment as per the Railway list
  • They have to furnish the document substantiating their relationship with the victim
  • After confirming the claim, the hospital will hand over the body in case of the deceased victim
  • At the time of handing over the body, the hospital authorities will issue the discharge certificate
  • The family has to apply for compensation by furnishing the necessary documents along with the discharge certificate
  • The compensation would be paid to only the persons having blood relations with the deceased. In the case of the married couple, if a man is dead, his wife will get the compensation and vice versa.
  • The Railways will pay Rs 10 lakh compensation including Rs 50,000 in cash and Rs 9.5 lakh in cheque. Similarly, critically injured persons will get Rs 5 lakh, and the people with minor injuries Rs 50,000.
