The Antichrist
The problem I put here is not who will take the place of mankind in the order of living beings (—man is an end—): but what kind of man should be produced, it should be decided that he is the most valuable, the most fit for life, the most secure guarantee of the future.
This more valuable type has appeared many times in the past: but always as a happy accident, as an exception, never intentionally.
Too many times it has indeed been the most feared; So far it has been almost a panic of terror; And from that terror, the opposite kind has been desired, cultivated, and obtained: the domestic animal, the herd animal, the sick animal-the man-the Christian…
The human race certainly does not represent an evolution toward a better or stronger or higher level, as progress is now understood.
This “progress” is just a modern idea, a false idea.
The European of today, in his essential value, is far below the European of the Renaissance; The process of development does not necessarily mean regeneration, growth, strengthening.
It is true that it succeeds in isolated and individual cases in different parts of the earth and under the most widely varying cultures, and in these cases a higher type certainly manifests itself; something that, in comparison to the human race collectively, appears as a kind of superman.
Such pleasant shocks of high success have always been possible and will probably be possible in times to come. Even entire races, tribes, and nations can sometimes represent such lucky accidents.
We must not show off and embellish Christianity: it has waged a war to the death against this higher type of man, it has put under its ban all the darker instincts of this type,
It developed out of these tendencies the concept of evil itself, the evil one—the strong man as the uniquely degraded, “outcast among men”.
Christianity has taken its share of all the weak, the low, the unsuccessful; It has made healthy living a norm opposed to all self-preservation instincts;
It has corrupted the capacities of even those natures who are most intellectually strong, by making the highest intellectual values sinful, illusory, full of temptation.
The saddest example: the corruption of Pascal, who believed that his intellect was destroyed by original sin, whereas it was actually destroyed by Christianity!
Here, apparently, someone is addressed by an interpreter who cannot forget that she is the daughter of a Lutheran pastor and the granddaughter of two others; A touch of conscience is found when reading “The Antichrist”.
She also suggests that after the author’s fall, the text may have been mutilated by some more sinister heretic.
There is not the slightest reason to believe that such a rift ever took place, nor is there evidence that their shared heritage of piety weighed as much on the brother as on the sister.
On the contrary, it should be clear that Nietzsche intended, in this book, to attack Christianity with all its might, that he had taken the utmost care with it in all his hasty writings, and that he wanted it to be printed exactly as it was.
The ideas in it were completely new to him when he set them up.
He has been developing these since his inception days. You’ll find some of them, clearly recognizable, in his first book, “The Birth of Tragedy”.
