THE STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO.

Once upon a time, there was a little black boy, and his name was Little Black Sambo. And his mother was called Black Mumbo.

And his father was called Black Jumbo. And Black Mambo made him a lovely little red coat and a pair of lovely little blue trousers.

And Black Jumbo went to the market and bought him a pretty green umbrella, and a lovely little pair of purple shoes with crimson soles and crimson linings.

And then wasn’t Little Black Sambo gorgeous? So he put on all his nice clothes and went out for a walk in the woods.

And slowly he met a tiger. And Tiger said to him, “Little Black Sambo, I’m going to eat you!”

And Little Black Sambo said, “Oh! Please, Mr. Tiger, don’t hit me, and I’ll give you my pretty little red coat.”

So the Tiger said, “Very well, this time I will not eat you, but you must give me your beautiful little red coat.”

So the Tiger got Little Black Sambo’s beautiful little red coat, and went away saying, “Now I am the grandest Tiger of the jungle.”

And Little Black Sambo went on, and by and by he met another Tiger, and he said to him, “Little Black Sambo, I’m going to eat you!” And Little Black Sambo said, “Oh! Please, Mr. Tiger, don’t hit me, and I’ll give you my beautiful little blue trousers.”

So the Tiger said, “Very well, this time I will not eat you, but you must give me your beautiful little blue trousers.”

So Tigger found poor Little Black Sambo’s pretty little blue trousers, and went away saying, “Now I’m the grandest Tigger in the jungle.”

And Little Black Sambo went on, and by and by he met another Tiger, and he said to him, “Little Black Sambo, I’m going to eat you!” And Little Black Sambo said, “Oh! Please, Mr. Tiger, don’t hit me, and I’ll give you my pretty little purple shoes with crimson soles and crimson linings.”

But Tiger said, “Of what use will your shoes be to me? I have four legs, and you have only two; You don’t have enough shoes for me.”

But Little Black Sambo said, “You can wear them on your ears.” “So I could,” said the Tiger: “that is a very good idea. Give them to me, and this time I will not eat you.”

So Tiger found poor Little Black Sambo’s beautiful little purple shoes with crimson soles and crimson linings, and went away saying, “Now I’m the grandest Tiger in the jungle.”

And slowly Little Black Sambo met the other Tiger, and he said to him, “Little Black Sambo, I will eat you!” And Little Black Sambo said, “Oh! Please, Mr. Tiger, don’t hit me, and I’ll give you my beautiful green umbrella.”

But the Tiger said, “How can I carry an umbrella when I need all my paws to walk?”

Little Black Sambo said, “You can tie a knot on your tail and carry it that way.” “So could I,” said Tigger. “Give it to me, and this time I won’t eat you.”

So he found poor Little Black Sambo’s beautiful green umbrella, and went away saying, “Now I’m the grandest tiger in the jungle.”

And poor Little Black Sambo went away crying because the ferocious Tigers had taken all his nice clothes.

Then he heard an eerie sound that sounded like “gr-rr-rr-rr-rrrr”, and it got louder and louder. “Oh dear!” Little Black Sambo said, “All the tigers out there are coming back to eat me!

What shall I do?” So he quickly ran to a palm tree and looked around to see what was the matter.

And there he saw all the tigers fighting and disputing which of them was the most majestic.

And at last, they all became so angry that they sprang up and took off all their fine clothes, and began to tear each other apart with their claws and bite each other with their great white teeth.

And they came rolling and rolling straight under the tree where Little Black Sambo was hiding, but he quickly jumped behind the canopy.

And all the tigers grabbed hold of each other’s tails as they staggered and scrambled, and so they found themselves in a circle around the tree.

Then, when the tigers were too low and too far away, Little Black Sambo jumped up and shouted, “Oh! Tiger! Why did you take off all your nice clothes? Don’t you want them now?” But the Tigers only replied, “Gr-r-rrr!”

Then Little Black Sambo said, “If you want them, say so, or I’ll take them.” But the Tigers didn’t want to give up on each other’s tails, and so they could only “Gr-r-r-rrrrrrr!” Could only say

So Little Black Sambo put on all his nice clothes again and off he went.

And the Tigers were very, very angry, but still, they didn’t leave each other’s tails. And they were so furious, that they ran around the tree, trying to beat each other, and they ran faster and faster, until they were spinning so fast that you could Couldn’t even see.

And they still ran faster and faster and faster, until they were all melted, and there was a big pool of melted butter (or “ghee”, as it’s called in India) at the bottom of the tree. There was nothing left.

Now Black Jumbo was coming home from his work
