Part 1: Success Begins in the Mind

Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.

Dr. Joyce Brothers

LESSON 1: Your Attitude Is Your Window to the World

Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.

George Bernard Shaw

It was just after 1:00 pm and Sarah was getting hungry. She had worked a few productive hours at her desk and decided to grab something to eat at a nearby coffee shop.

A few minutes later, Sam walks into the coffee shop. He was also on his lunch break. Sam sat down at a table a few feet away from Sarah.

The same waitress served Sarah and Sam that afternoon. Each customer waited approximately the same amount of time before the waitress took the order.

Each of them got food at about the same time. Each of them was served a well prepared, nutritious meal. And each waited the same amount of time for the waitress to deliver the check.

But that’s where the similarities ended. Sara walked into the coffee shop smiling, spring in step and with a very positive attitude towards the world. It was plain for all to see.

Her body language and her posture reflect her optimism. Sarah has an enjoyable lunch, has some pleasant conversation with the waitress, and goes back to work with recharged batteries.

Sam, on the other hand, entered the coffee shop with a sad face. It looked like he’d been sucking on sour pickles all morning.

He was bent over and tense. His body language screamed “Stay away from me!” He is annoyed when the waitress doesn’t take his order right away.

He was annoyed about how long it took for his food to arrive. He complained about the food and got angry when he didn’t get the check right away.

Why did Sarah and Sam have such different experiences at the coffee shop? Remember that everyone was treated exactly the same.

This means: Sara sees the world in a positive light. Sam sees the world in a negative light.

a definition of attitude

Think of your attitude as the mental filter through which you experience the world. Some people view the world through the filter of optimism (the glass being half full) while others view life through the filter of pessimism (the glass being half empty).

Let me give you some examples to explain the difference between positive attitude and negative attitude. A person with a negative attitude thinks, “I can’t.”

A person with a positive attitude thinks “I can.”
