  1. Fourteenth century
    Mundinus or Mondino de’Luzzi (1276–1326), ‘restorer’ Anatomy’, was an Italian anatomist and professor of anatomy in Bologna. He wrote a book called Anatomia which was the standard anatomical text for more than a century. He taught anatomy by dissection for which his text was used as a guide. He was the most famous anatomist before Vesalius.

    Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) of Italy, the originator of Cross-sectional anatomy was one of the world’s greatest geniuses.     Vesalius (1514–1564), a ‘reformer of anatomy’, German by origin, was Belgian (Brussels) by birth and found an Italian (Padua) university suited to his work. He was a professor of anatomy at Padua. He is considered the founder of modern anatomy because he taught that anatomy could only be learned through dissection. He opposed and corrected Galen’s erroneous concepts and fought against his authority, thus reviving anatomy after nearly 15 centuries of stagnation.
